An animal welfare charity has announced its closure citing a “very difficult financial situation” and ill-health of its trustees.

North Devon Animal Ambulance has operated for 23 years and describes itself as specialising in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming domestic animals.

In a statement on social media, the charity said it would close its doors “with heavy hearts” and would shut on 31 August.

"High veterinary costs and ever-increasing running costs mean we must close our doors whilst we are still able to meet our financial liabilities and comply with Charity Commission regulations,” the charity said.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over this time and we wish you all, and the animals, good health.”

The charity recorded an income of £276,539 in its latest accounts for the financial year ending 31 August 2023, with spending of £306,110.

According to its last annual report, the charity’s members remained limited to 30 “ in an endeavour to reduce administration costs”.

The charity’s report said trustee Chris Burrington had to resign due to serious health issues.

The report said: ​​”Chris has been a trustee for many years dealing with all maintenance problems and a faithful and loyal trustee bringing calm and quiet wisdom to the committee meetings with his dry sense of humour. 

“He will be greatly missed.”
