Girlguiding to sell activity centre to campaign group despite initially rejecting bid
Girlguiding UK has chosen Foxie’s Future, a charitable incorporated organisation founded by former Girlguiding members, as its preferred bidder for its Foxlease activity centre, just two months after rejecting its bid.
Foxie’s Future was launched to crowdfund for the Foxlease activity centre in Hampshire, one of the five sites that Girlguiding is selling to secure its financial future.
In July, Foxie’s Future said its bid for the property had been unsuccessful, with campaigners alleging on social media that the property was being sold to a bidder with no links to Girlguiding.
Foxie’s Future raised more than £4m in just a year to bid for the property, which was listed by Savils estate agents in two lots – one with a guide price of £2.5m and another with a guide price of £1.5m.
Foxie’s Future previously said it was “exceedingly disappointed” at the choice to sell to an alternative bidder and added that Girlguiding did not give a reason for the decision. The CIO urged Girlguiding members to contact the charity’s leadership to encourage its board to reverse the decision.
But last week, Girlguiding said it had chosen Foxie’s Future as its preferred bidder for the sale, with a spokesperson saying: “The trustees continue to assess all the advice and information they have and have decided it is in the best interests of the organisation and its members to proceed with Foxie’s Future as the preferred bidder.
“We're working together so that Foxlease can be used by Girlguiding members in future.”
When asked for more details about the bid, the spokesperson said that the charity was not able to provide any further information due to commercial confidentiality, but the charity planned to share more details after the sale’s completion.
“For each activity centre sale, we have worked hard and with care to act in the best interests and for the overall welfare of the whole organisation, our members and charity law,” the spokesperson said.
In a post on Facebook, Foxie’s Future said it was “absolutely delighted” with the decision, adding: “We’re pleased to share that we are also working with Girlguiding to explore the ways that Foxlease can be used by Girlguiding members in the future to maximise opportunities for adventure and we’re really excited about that too.”
The CIO said its future plans included making Foxlease available for all in the wider community, but added: “We’re keen to start what we see as a great future relationship with Girlguiding to benefit its members.”
A spokesperson for Foxie’s Future said: “We are working through the transaction process at the moment and we are continuing to fundraise to support our plans for a phased reopening of the site from early next year.”
