Environmental charity appoints new chief

The environmental charity Green Action Trust has promoted Tom Campbell to its permanent chief executive role, following a stint as interim chief executive.

The Glasgow-based charity works to address climate change, inequality and biodiversity loss across Scotland.

Campbell joined the charity in 2023 as strategy director before taking up the interim chief executive role in February, when Derek Robertson retired after three-and-a-half years in post.

Before joining Green Action Trust, Campbell spent five years as chief executive of North Highland Initiative, an education and community support charity in Wick, Caithness.

Campbell said: “Along with the wider team, I’m committed to creating lasting change with pragmatism, making a real difference to people’s lives while protecting habitats and encouraging biodiversity.

“I am especially looking forward to strengthening our work to tackle environmental injustice and expanding our partnerships.

“We work in some of the most deprived areas of Scotland and are looking to expand our reach, but we need to ensure that’s done with the support of policy makers, private business and of course communities themselves.”

The Green Action Trust runs the Central Scotland Green Network, a 40-year programme, funded by the Scottish government, which “works to change the face of central Scotland by restoring and improving its rural and urban landscape”.

The charity said: “Leading the trust’s senior team, Tom has established a clear set of strategic priorities, which include meeting the core objectives of the Central Scotland Green Network, communicating the impact of our work effectively, building resilience in the organisation and developing new partnerships and markets.”
