Former treasurer who stole £230,000 from charity is jailed
An animal rescue charity’s former treasurer has been jailed for three years for defrauding it out of more than £230,000.
Kevin Proctor, 62, of Worsbrough, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was treasurer and trustee at Barnsley Animal Rescue Centre between August 2016 and 2022.
He obtained £230,875 through fraudulent activity and in July at Sheffield Crown Court pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position.
At the same court on Friday, Proctor was sentenced to three months in prison for the crime.
BARC’s accounts for the financial year ending 31 March 2017 show Proctor received more than £14,000 in remuneration while committing the fraud.
The charity said justice had been served and it would continue with the work it was doing by rescuing animals.
A spokesperson for BARC, which looks after dogs, cats and rabbits, said: “This has been a difficult and disappointing time for our charity and was reported immediately to the Charity Commission and the Barnsley CID, who have dealt with this matter on our behalf.”
