Inquiry into charity that failed to comply with official warning
The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into a Muslim charity that failed to comply with an official warning.
Al-Hikam runs a mosque in Bradford and was established to advance the Islamic faith.
The regulator’s inquiry into the charity, which also supports young people and provides education services, was opened on 13 September 2024.
The commission said Al-Hikam was issued with an official warning relating to misconduct and mismanagement in November 2023, involving a failure to comply with legal duties.
“The trustees have since failed to demonstrate that they have made progress against rectifying the actions set out in the warning,” the regulator said.
The commission said the inquiry would examine the administration and governance of the charity by the trustees, preparedness of trustees to fulfil their responsibilities under charity law, and suitability of the charity’s environment, particularly in relation to the vulnerable people in its care.
The inquiry will also look at the charity’s links to connected companies, its viability and the suitability of its structure.
“Additionally, it will examine any conflicts of interest in relation to the charity,” the charity said.
Al-Hikam has been contacted for comment.
