Commission looks into charity that closed abruptly

The Charity Commission is assessing information about a community support charity that closed suddenly.

Re:work, based in Bristol, said it was formally advised to cease operations on 31 October because of long-term financial issues.

The closure means Re:loved, the charity’s shop in the Knowle West area of Bristol, has closed until further notice.

Discussions are ongoing about our future and we will make further announcements as and when we are advised we are able to,” the charity said.

“We would ask you to be patient and please wait for official updates.

“Individual members of staff are not in a position to answer questions directly.”

Re:work’s activities include developing and maintaining training, employment and volunteering opportunities for young people, particularly focusing on “semi-excluded” students and young offenders.

The charity had an income of £270,135 and spending of £292,050 in the year to the end of March 2023, according to its latest accounts.

It employed an average of 12 people during that period, the accounts show.

“The trustees are aware and acknowledge that the financial situation of the charity is challenging, as is the case for the charitable sector generally,” the accounts said.

“However, we trust that our team is dedicated and creative, our service is needed and effective, that we have clear aims and are part of strong and useful networks.”

The Charity Commission said it has seen concerns raised about the charity’s “alleged” plans to close.

We are currently assessing information available to us to determine if there is a role for the commission,” a commission spokesperson said.

“We have guidance on gov.uk to help any trustees who make the difficult decision to close their charity.”
