Street sale nets charity almost £1m more than expected

The Canal and River Trust has received almost £1m more than expected after selling 24 properties on a street in Gloucestershire.

The properties in Dock Road, Sharpness, were listed for auction with a guide price of £1.6m but sold for £2.5m yesterday.

The auction house Allsop described the lot as a “rare unbroken” street comprising 12 terrace houses, eight semi-detached and two detached properties.

It also included two semi-detached mixed-use buildings, three garages, a single-storey workshop and 1.8 acres of land.

Canal and River Trust made £168,544 a year through rent of the properties, according to the listing.

A spokesperson for the Canal and River Trust said: “Following the auction, we are now writing to tenants to confirm the sale and to provide them with details on their new landlord.

“We understand a change of landlord can be unsettling, but there won’t be a change in resident’s tenancies, and we’ll be working with the new owner to ensure a smooth handover of the properties.

“We took independent valuation advice ahead of the auction, and as a charity it’s important we raise enough income to look after the region’s historic canals so that everyone can use and enjoy them.”
