Rape crisis charity is latest to quit X

A rape crisis charity has become the latest to leave X, saying the social media platform “no longer reflects the principles that guide our work”.

Rape Crisis South London posted about its decision on LinkedIn, saying: “As an organisation committed to supporting survivors of rape and sexual abuse, we continuously strive to align our values with platforms and spaces that promote inclusivity, safety and respect.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to step away from X, as we feel it no longer reflects the principles that guide our work.”

The charity is the latest in a spate of organisations to leave the platform, including the refugee charity Refugee Action, the Scottish children’s rights charity Children First and the charity leadership body Acevo.

Rape Crisis South London said it remains “steadfast” in its mission to support its community and will continue to connect through other channels, including Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Red Godfrey-Sagoo, the charity’s chief executive, said she was proud of her organisation for “taking a stand”.

In a post on LinkedIn, she said: “The principles for freedom of speech and the lack of consequence when information becomes disinformation, has become a significant issue for those in the VAWG sector.”

She said disinformation had been posted about people including Jess Phillips, the domestic violence and safeguarding minister, and the rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot.

“These are not rare cases, they are everyday realities for many people.”

She added: “I am proud of my organisation taking a stand, a stand that I am personally taking too. Silence is no longer an option.”
