Up to 200 jobs at risk as Scope proposes closing half of its shops
The disability charity is consulting on plans to close more than half of its charity shops within 18 months, after its retail operations were forecast to make a £1.5m loss this financial year.
The consultation, which is open until the beginning of March, includes proposals to close 77 of the charity’s 138 shops.
If the plans go ahead, up to 200 of the disability charity’s 458 retail staff could lose their jobs. About 2,000 of the charity’s 4,337 shop volunteers would also be affected.

Government accepts amendment to marketing bill that could boost fundraising by almost £300m a year
The government has adopted a proposed amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill that will prevent the removal of a soft opt-in provision for charities’ email marketing, which could help raise an extra almost £300m for the sector.
A campaign led by the trade body the Data & Marketing Association and backed by several major charities urged the government to adopt an amendment to the bill that will retain soft opt-in for charities’ marketing emails, which would have otherwise been removed under the incoming legislation.

Underperforming charity worker awarded £22,000 for unfair dismissal
The digital content producer, who completed just six pieces of social media content in a month compared with another colleague’s 73, was unfairly dismissed because the charity did not follow its procedure, a tribunal has found
Anita Briggs, who was employed by the National Museums of Scotland as a digital media content producer between 2009 and 2024, was not given adequate warning in line with the charity’s performance policy prior to her dismissal, the tribunal ruled.
