Russell Brand’s charity has closed
The Charity Commission has removed Russell Brand’s mental health and addiction support charity from its register, the regulator said.
The Stay Free Foundation, which was founded and chaired by Brand until he stepped down in October 2023, was removed from the regulator’s register last month, according to the commission’s website.
The regulator said trustees of the charity told the commission in September that they planned to shut it down.
The charity recorded an income of £126,130 according to its accounts for the year to the end of June 2023 and expenditure of £52,353 for the same period.
The regulator opened a compliance case into the charity in September 2023 after Brand was accused by four women of sexual assault after a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.
Brand denied the claims and said he had been targeted by the media. The regulator has since closed its case.
A Charity Commission spokesperson said: “Following serious concerns being raised in the media about the conduct of Stay Free Foundation’s chair of trustees, we opened a regulatory compliance case.
“We sought assurances from the trustees that they were effectively managing the risks to the charity’s reputation and we were satisfied they did so in a reasonable way that was in the best interests of the charity.
“After probing aspects of the charity’s administration, governance and management, we also gave regulatory advice.
“The trustees notified us in September of their decision to shut down the charity. While the charity and our regulatory case are closed, we reserved the right to revisit matters that fall under our regulatory remit should new information come to light.”
Brand’s representatives have been contacted for comment.
