New chief at support charity as founder prepares to step down after 34 years

The support charity Community Accounting Plus has promoted Eva Stevens to chief executive as its founder scales back his involvement after more than three decades.

Stevens is the charity’s head of accounting and will take over from John O’Brien on 1 April.

Community Accounting Plus supports charities through training and advice on accounts, payroll and bookkeeping.

O’Brien, who set up the charity in 1991, said he would work three days a week for at least a year.

“It’s a good time to step aside and let others continue,” O’Brien said.

Stevens has been at the charity for 17 years and previously worked for local councils as an internal auditor.

“I’m so pleased Eva said yes to taking on this role, she is a great friend and colleague,” said O’Brien.

“Her knowledge and understanding of the finances of small charities and community interest companies is second to none.”

He will focus on service delivery for the remainder of his time at the charity and would be available to help Stevens and the leadership team when needed, he said.

“After that I expect I’ll still work a little, supporting some groups personally and volunteering here and there as you do,” O’Brien said.

Stevens said: “I feel that I have some big shoes to fill, John is so well known across the charity sector and I am sure there will be many more challenges to face in the future of charity accounting as things continue to change and evolve.”

Michael Fisher will become the charity’s head of accounting and join Stevens and payroll manager Alison Paling to make up its leadership team.

O’Brien said the charity had continued to grow and adapt to a changing world since it was set up.

“Having been in the same job for almost 34 years you might think I don’t really like change, but I love it,” O’Brien said.

“Every single day has been different – new groups to support, new challenges and opportunities, and the change of leadership at CA Plus is great news.

“When a founding CEO steps aside after so long it can be a tricky time, but with the board, we set out our transition plan to make sure CA Plus is as strong and focused in the years ahead as it has ever been.”
