Social worker appointed to top job at children’s charity

A social worker with more than 30 years of experience has been appointed as the next director of the children’s charity St Michael’s Fellowship.

Oretha Wofford will take the top job at the 122-year-old charity after its current chief, Sue Pettigrew, retires at the end of the month.

Pettigrew served as director for 36 years but has worked at the charity for a total of 51 years. She started as a senior resident at St Michael’s in 1973, before moving into the deputy director post in 1986 and then taking up the director role in 1988.

She was awarded an OBE for her services to children and families in 2016.

Wofford brings more than 30 years of experience as a social worker to the post, having worked for the London boroughs of Lewisham, Lambeth, Haringey and Croydon, as well as West Sussex County Council.

Wofford said: “My vision is for St Michael’s to be at the cutting edge of progressive, relationship-based, and evidence-informed practice, driving change both at the frontline and at a national level.

“We will deepen our partnerships with local authorities, explore new models of early intervention and ensure that our practice is always reflective, learning and pushing the boundaries of what is possible for families.

“At the heart of our work will be a strong commitment to social justice – challenging racial and economic inequalities, embedding anti-oppressive approaches and advocating for a system that truly works for all children.”

Pettigrew said: “It has been an honour to lead this organisation, and I want to express my gratitude for the support […] provided throughout the years. Working alongside our dedicated staff, trustees, professionals and loyal supporters has been a privilege.”

She said she was pleased to introduce Wofford as the charity’s next director, adding: “Her wealth of experience in children’s social care and a strong commitment to ensuring every child has an opportunity to thrive will contribute significantly to achieving our goals.

“I am confident that in this new chapter under Oretha’s leadership, St Michael’s will continue to flourish and make a lasting impact on our families for generations to come.”
