Autism charity changes logo to better represent its work

An autism charity has changed its logo as part of a rebrand designed to better represent the organisation’s work.

Autism Together, which supports more than 400 autistic adults across care homes, supported living properties and day services in the north-west of England, has rebranded for the first time since its name change more than 10 years ago.

The charity, which used to be known as Wirral Autistic Society, has shifted from its previous logo, which incorporated a spectrum design, to one which better represents its work to support autistic people.

Charlene Errity, head of creative communications at Autism Together, said: “The colour spectrum has been traditionally used to represent autistic people as being ‘on the spectrum’, but increasingly this is a term which doesn’t seem to accurately reflect the people we support and their individual needs.

“Autistic people have unique skills and needs, and don’t necessarily sit on a linear scale.”

The charity’s new logo uses the two stems of the ‘A’ from Autism Together to “show the pillars of support, united between those giving support and being supported”, Errity said.

“We wanted it to be bold, fresh and memorable,” she said. “The aim of this is to show our support for autistic people, our connection to the local community, along with representing inclusivity, acceptance and respect.”

The rebrand incorporates a new font called Puffin, which the charity said is “bold and easy to read, while still being fun and friendly”.

The charity also has a new colour palette, with shades that Autism Together said were designed to be “cooler and calming”, which have been tested to ensure they are accessible for people with learning disabilities and colour blindness.

Errity said: “Our chosen shades are cool, fun and non-gender specific – so they should appeal to all, with colour and tone choices that feel right for everyone.

“We named the new brand colours after locations within our charity – Pool Purple, Raby Green, River Navy, and Oak Cream. You’ll see different versions of our logo using these various colours and shades across our website, signage, brochures and merchandising.”

The charity’s website has been updated to reflect the new branding.

It said the rebrand was informed by extensive research that looked at other charity brands and logos, as well as key words and themes associated with the charity.

The branding was also shaped by feedback from a group of individuals who are supported by Autism Together, with some of their comments being included in a video on the charity’s YouTube channel.

The rebrand was carried out in-house by the charity’s marketing team, led by Errity, who is a graphic designer, meaning no additional costs were incurred.

Helen Bilton, director of people and culture at Autism Together, said: “The board and executive team are absolutely thrilled with the new branding for our charity. We love the font style and the pictorial elements in the ‘A’ representing the care our fabulous staff provide every day of the year.

“We can’t wait to start using it across all our upcoming projects at Autism Together as we look forward to an exciting future for our charity.”
